Until 1986, no public road reached Fjærland. For centuries the village at the head of the Fjærlandsfjord was reached only by water, and Fjord & Glacier Tour from Balestrand tours still trace that older approach — a 25-kilometre arm of the Sognefjord, walled by rock and fed by glacial meltwater.
The Sognefjord itself runs 205 kilometres inland and drops to 1,308 metres at its deepest point. Balestrand, on the southern shore, grew into an artists' colony in the 1880s, its Swiss-style villas built for painters chasing the light on the water.
Above the village lies Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on the European mainland, covering roughly 474 square kilometres. Ice calved from Flatbreen settles near 60 metres above sea level, among the lowest-lying glacier ice in southern Norway. Farm records from the eighteenth century describe the ice advancing toward tilled ground during the Little Ice Age. Both arms have retreated sharply since, and glaciologists have monitored their fronts for more than a century.
The Norwegian Glacier Museum opened in 1991, the same year Jostedalsbreen National Park was established. Sverre Fehn designed the building at Fjærlandsvegen 862: pale concrete wedges set against the moraine, with an exterior stair that functions as a viewing platform for the valley. The roof line was kept low so the structure would not compete with the ice behind it. Fehn received the Pritzker Prize in 1997. Inside, the collection explains ice mechanics, meltwater chemistry and organic finds released by shrinking snowfields. The Ulltveit-Moe Centre for Climate, added in 2007, extended the museum's remit from glaciology to climate science.
Fjærland's second identity arrived in 1996, when the village was declared Norway's Book Town. Disused barns, stables and ferry waiting rooms hold kilometres of second-hand shelves, kept by a population of roughly 300.
